Inside: Learn seven fun preschool movement songs. Redirect wild energy into a safe and fun indoor activity.
Shrieks of glee filled the room – but any minute someone was going to crash and burn.
I took a deep breath and wished I could take the kids outside. Outside they could run, they could climb, they could wrestle like bear cubs and not break anything.
But outside was not an option.
How could I redirect this massive energy into something safer – and quieter – inside the house?

Preschool Movement Songs that Get the Wiggles Out
When you’re stuck inside and the kids need some big motor movement, action songs are a lifesaver. Below I’ve collected some of my favorites. Choose one to share with your child, or sing and dance through the entire playlist on youTube.
Wiggy Wiggles Freeze Dance
Wiggy Wiggles Freeze Dance by Hap Palmer is a peppy song that gets kids moving – and listening! Dance freely, then freeze when the music stops. Use your best slow-motion moves during the “slow down” section.
Shake My Sillies Out
Shake My Sillies Out by Raffi guides kids through shaking, clapping, jumping and more. This was a personal favorite of mine as a child – and kids still love it today!

Ring Around the Rosy
Ring Around the Rosy is another favorite from my childhood that is always a hit. Hold hands and move in a circle to the music, then fall down to the ground on the lyrics “all fall down!”
Head Shoulders Knees and Toes
Head Shoulders Knees and Toes brings the energy down fast. Sing more slowly with each repetition of the song and move from wild to calm.
Hurry Little Ducklings
Hurry Little Ducklings is a new favorite in my household. My kids love to waddle around the room, then “dive” into the water to catch a fish.
Listen and Move
Listen and Move encourages kids to move in different ways – and test their memories. If you are short on space, ask your child to run in place during the “run” verse.
If You’re Happy and You Know It
If You’re Happy and You Know It is a well-loved movement song. My kids enjoy the interesting movements this version adds.
When going outside is not an option, you need some ideas in your back pocket. Try these preschool movement songs with your kids next time they need to get some wiggles out indoors.
